About me

Portrait of mental health therapist, James Oxford, LMHC.

Hi, I’m James Oxford, MA, LMHC.

I’m an existential and psychodynamic therapist and owner of Natura Psychotherapy, PLLC.

On therapy

I believe in empowerment and self-compassion as pillars for change and growth. Whether healing from past traumas, facing current anxiety and stress, or clarifying which direction you want to head in life, we can work as a team to find the tools best suited for your health and well-being. Together, we can explore existential themes when it comes to life's more difficult questions, such as meaning-making and how we see ourselves through identity.

I am LGBTQIA+ allied, neurodivergent-informed, and believe the first step in healing is showing up. My background in music and art has taught me to fully respect the power of creation and expression, and hold a nonjudgmental stance as we honor your voice, your experiences, and your values.

What is Natura Psychotherapy?

natura: Latin for nature (ex: human nature)

I started Natura Psychotherapy because I am passionate about helping people cope with relational and existential anxiety. Life will continue to be unexpected, but we can always meet it with a confidence of who we are and how we want to live. My therapeutic style is rooted in psychodynamics with an existential lens, which is the foundation for a holistic approach to therapy.

If you’re thinking, “Wait, what the heck is existential therapy?” that is okay. For me, it is a therapeutic lens with a rich history that highlights the intrinsic aspects of our human nature, such as our relationship to anxiety, accepting responsibility for our actions, existing within a body, practicing autonomy, feeling connection and isolation, and facing feelings about mortality. “Okay, but how might that be helpful in everyday life?” By considering these fundamental experiences to our existence as humans, it informs us of how we want to show up in other areas of life, such as in our relationships, in our jobs, with creativity, and in our existence by ourselves.

Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue.

On creativity.

I believe that everyone has a creative voice that should be celebrated and cultivated. Whether you are an artist or musician, poet or philosopher, or you prefer to lean into your creative energy with how you dress or enter a room—I encourage everyone to find something that speaks to them, and do that consistently.

Outside of the therapy office, I lean into my creative voice as much as possible. I enjoy writing of all types, reading, recording and mixing music, 35 mm photography, playing retro video games, and being a doting cat dad to two amazing kitties. I also enjoy riding my bike around town and attempting to adhere to a daily walk and yoga practice.
