Your voice matters.

But the highest and really most lasting gift given to us is always our essential nature, with which we are gifted in such a way that we are what we are only through it.

James Oxford approaches therapy from an affirming, holistic, and existential lens, utilizing relational psychodynamics as the foundation of therapy.

Hi, I’m James.

I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Washington, and proud owner of Natura Psychotherapy, PLLC.

I believe in affirming what it feels like to exist. If we do not validate our experiences, how can we advocate for what we need? We are all imperfect humans, and that is perfectly okay and natural. After all, we are typically doing the best with what means we have available in the moment. We all can pick up behaviors along the way that don’t suit us for where we want to go, such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, and negative self-talk. Life is already difficult enough, and sometimes these can only add to it.

In therapy, I embrace existential themes that are intrinsic to being human, such as autonomy, isolation, death anxiety, and freedom/responsibility. Let’s work together to build insights into lasting, intentional change that is important to you.

I believe everyone is unique with what their experiences and how they relate to the world, and embrace a phenomenological position in learning who you are, what makes sense to you, and your experience of reality. I look forward to working together and learning more about your worldview.

On creativity.

I believe that everyone has a creative voice that should be celebrated and cultivated. Whether you are an artist or musician, poet or philosopher, or you prefer to lean into your creative energy with how you dress or enter a room—I encourage everyone to find something that speaks to them, and do that consistently.

Outside of the therapy office, I lean into my creative voice as much as possible. I enjoy writing of all types, reading, recording and mixing music, 35 mm photography, playing retro video games (Gamecube at the moment), and being a doting cat dad to two amazing kitties. I also enjoy riding my bike around town and adhere to a daily walk and yoga practice.
